WEBB, GEORGE Il. Efects of surfactants on the twitch tension uf frog sartorius muscle. Am. J. Physiol. 207(2) : 397-401. 196+--Many types of cells show permeability increases to ions and to various uncharged molecules when exposed to surface-active agents (surfactants) . Nonionic surfactants are less effective than ionic surf’actants in increasing permeability and in depolarizing nerve and muscle cells. In the present experiments the strength of isometric twitch responses of directly stimulated frog sartorius muscles was measured. Ionic surfactants generally produced an irreversible decrease in the twitch response, whereas nonionic surfactants (at equimolar concentrations) had little effect. Aerosol OT conditioned muscles so that curare or neostigmine appeared to produce a decrease in the twitch tension of directly stimulated fibers. Possibly the Aerosol OT treatment increased the permeability of the conducting membrane, allowing curare and neostigmine to interact with the acetylcholine system proposed by Nachmansohn. The above observations could be accounted for by increases in permeability caused by the ionic surfactants. Two observations suggested additional actions of ionic surfactants: low concentrations of cetyltrimethylammonium produced a reversible decrease in twitch tension; low concentrations of anionic surfactants caused an increase in contractile tension.

The Pattern of Activation in the Sartorius Muscle of the Frog
The development of isometric twitch tension has been compared with the redevelopment of isometric tension in the fully active frog sartorius muscle following release. At 0 degrees C the rate of rise of isometric twitch tension is the same as that for the muscle in the fully active state at the same tension but not until about 40 msec. after the stimulus and then only for a few milliseconds. The...
متن کاملQuinine and Caffeine Effects on 45Ca Movements in Frog Sartorius Muscle
1 mM caffeine, which produces only twitch potentiation and not contracture in frog sartorius muscle, increases both the uptake and release of (45)Ca in this muscle by about 50 %, thus acting like higher, contracture-producing concentrations but less intensely. Quinine increases the rate of release of (45)Ca from frog sartorius but not from the Achilles tendon. The thresholds for the quinine eff...
متن کاملEffect of manganese ions on excitation-contraction coupling in frog sartorius muscle.
Manganese ions are known to inhibit the calcium spike in crayfish and barnacle. In frog sartorius muscle, we found that Mn++ inhibits the peak tension of twitch, tetanus, and potassium contracture and also the rate of rise and relaxation of tension. The inhibiting effect of Mn++ increased with increasing concentration (1-10 mM). The magnitude of resting potential and the amplitude of action pot...
متن کاملVolume change and pressure development in muscle during contraction.
Volume change and pressure development in muscle during contraction. 1967.-Volume changes recorded in isometric and isotonic twitches of gastrocnemius muscle are similar to those recorded in sartorius muscle. The major differences are the greater difficulty in approaching isometric recording conditions in the gastrocnemius muscle and the possibility that a portion of the volume change could be ...
متن کاملEnhancement of the twitch of bull frog sartorius muscle by fluorides.
Effects of 5 kinds of fluorides on the twitch of the sartorius muscle of the bull frog were investigated. All of the fluorides (0.1-2.0 mM) enhanced the twitch evoked by nerve stimulation. The extents of enhancement at 2.0 mM were in the order: stannous fluoride much greater than potassium fluoride greater than sodium silico fluoride greater than sodium fluoride greater than diammine silver flu...
